Tongala Memorial is home to the world’s first Men’s Shed, opened in 1998 and named in honour of Dick McGowan, a local visionary who identified the need for men to congregate to find someone to talk to and activities to do, the concept is now a global force dedicated to pushing forth positive social change. Tongala Memorial is a 70 bed aged care home that has been serving their local community for more than 90 years. It was established in 1925 as the Tongala and District Bush Nursing Memorial Hospital, in memory of the local men and women who served and died in World War I.

Firstly my mother passed away here on the 19th of October 2025.If I could rate them less i would. I received a phone call at 3am telling me my mother had diorer and was throwing up i was asked what should I do?ring the virtual doctor or an ambulance..my response was your ringing me at 3am what do you think you should do..call an ambulance. Turned out they had a gastro outbreak the R.N.on duty was 100% incompetent. I arrived at the home at 10.30am to find my mother in a lounge chair with a banana on a plate in front of her with 2 pieces cut she had been trying to eat it and couldn't it was all mushed on the table a staff member was sitting near her on a laptop. I cut up the banana and fed it to mum myself she was so hungry she ate it all.I suggested to the staff member it would be nice if they could feed her as she couldn't feed herself. I had a meeting with the new manager she assured me she would send me emails of everything that was happening with mum in the month that followed i did not receive 1 email. 2 weeks after I received a phone call from a doctor in Echuca emergency at 12am telling me mum was there with a broken hip no calls from the home just emergency i had to ask him did they tell you how it happened he said she fell on a walker...my mother did not have a walker. To this day I have not been told by the manager how it happened only another resident in the home told us.mum got through the operation and was doing well with physiotherapy in Bendigo hospital her surgery was a Thursday they sent her back to Tongala on the Monday and the phone calls started at 5.30pm that day. They were incapable of giving her physiotherapy and put her bed on the floor. I received a call telling me to prepare her funeral she passed away within 2 weeks. My mother had Dementia and this home is 100% incapable of caring for dementia patients. The staff don't understand presedures at all to the point of when mum passed they rang Tobin's funeral home in Echuca to collect her which they did.The day after we were notified by the Coroners office and local police it was a reportable death. The police should have been notified and the Coroners would have came to pick up mum. Instead my brother had to go to Tobin's the following Tuesday to identify my mother's body. There are no excuses for their lack of care and procedures. I write this in the hope I can save others from putting their loved ones into care here its been a nightmare since we left her there. She wasn't even there 2yrs.
