I have given this review careful thought and decided to make this review inorder to give insight for other people who are considering placing their loved one in residential nursing home care at Whiddon Easton Park. My mother was here for over nine years and passed away last year at this facility. Initially I felt supported and considered my mum was getting decent care but last few years there were may red flags. But when I was considering moving my mum the manager persuaded me to stay and gave me assurances things would improve-that didn’t happen .The management also initiated an NCAT case for Guardianship and I’m hoping they advised this because they cared for my mums welfare and weren’t motivated by the money they made from us. At one stage the GP’s that they use at Whiddon advised NCAT that my mum could travel overseas with a nurse/doctor even though she was bed bound with dementia , against my advice and indeed to cut a long story short she was refused boarding on the plane- so traumatic . My mum was moved to the dementia care unit but the Whiddon isn’t specialised in dementia care or end of life care in my opinions .I witnessed my mum’s hair in tangles with old food stuck on it, dirty nails ( which I would cut) teeth decay ( no signs of teeth being cleaned) she also had fallen off the bed a few times over the years , soaked pads full of urine which wet the sheets and some care staff looking as if they were doing is a favour by taking care of mum; a few made you feel welcome so thank you to those. My mum was given low quality food that made me sick smelling it, sometimes just two dollops of potatoes ,we trust these facilities to do their job and they are failing the elderly in their care ! There’s an infestation of cockroaches so very disgusting as this reflects on poor sanitation , also eggs of the roaches on the clothes and droppings in the wardrobe , I mentioned to staff but nothing was done. My mums legs atrophied over the years, she went in there walking on a frame - then due to lack of physio she became bed bound, My main disappointment and concern is the woeful and inadequate medical care mainly because it’s rushed ; I could rarely get the GP to talk to me about my mums medical care. Over the nine years I witnessed other patients in distress there ( fallen off the bed and would inform the staff so they could be assisted ) but why weren’t the staff there checking ? I’m also deeply concerned about the last few months of my mums medical treatment there . In a nutshell she was malnourished and severely dehydrated, she did have dementia and that was the reason they would give for her rapid deterioration. My mum was sent to hospital after not eating for a week , she was sent back to Whiddon much better , but the GP they use there places her on some extremely strong opioids and when I raised my concerns about it , I felt my concerns were ignored ,how can we give informed medical consent on a 5 minute medical consultation. I feel that drug accelerated her demise. My mum required feeding and that takes time but the staff are rushed and don’t take the time to feed properly - hence my mum weighing about 40 kgs ( approx) , all skin and bones. So now the administration section where I’m trying to get help with the RAD account for Probate to settle the estate are not cooperating with me or my lawyer, they say due to “ privacy” so that is what has made me finally decide to leave this review ; it seems to me they willingly take your money to be admitted here and then when person dies they want nothing to do with you , the family who have to sort matters out, this is so unprofessional. Do better! Please consider other nursing homes after reading reviews. I truly feel that my mum was badly let down by lack of adequate and proper care at Whiddon - only minimal care inorder to tick their boxes - robot's have more compassion than some of the staff at this facility,. I do thank the few staff there that do care for the elderly . My mum was a lovely lady and deserved better, I thank God she is no longer suffering.
